Freshman year of college is always memorable. In the first part of this series, watch how two girls say goodbye and thank you to their first year of college.

Name: Maddy Mermelstein

School: College of Arts and Sciences/College of Communications

Her Thank You Note:

"I think that I would thank it for forcing me to grow in a way that I wasn't expecting. I really thought I knew what college was going to be like and then I definitely didn’t know what college was going to be like once I got here. I really feel like I grew up in a lot of ways and I learned how to be in a way that is not as simplistic as doing your laundry or going to the grocery store. It's an emotional independence and a strength to find within yourself. It’s so odd to start over all by yourself at such an older age when you have so much of your life established already, so I definitely want to thank my freshman year for helping me feel like I can take on anything."

Name: Jen Margolis

School: College of Communications

Her Thank You Note:

“Thank you for all the new friends and great experiences! I love the independence that comes with going to college. It has been such a learning and growing experience."

"I will miss living in the same area as a lot of my friends. It was so fun to have friends on my floor/in my dorm and just be able to see them whenever.”

Freshman year is such an important time. You are forced to learn about yourself in a way that you never have before. You're pushed out of your comfort zone, you’re able to try new things. Everyone is in a state of vulnerability because you must create a new life for yourself, while putting yourself out there, and making new friends. This is one of the many reasons why we say thank you to one of the most formative and fascinating years of education.
